2010 National Congress & Trade Show - Let's GO - Region 6

Dear Region 6,

I hope this finds you well. 30 days from now I will be arriving in Hartford , CT for the largest national event that your organization conducts. I have been so proud to state that Region 6 will make this event the best to date. This is your congress too. Registrations are doing well but we are not on the record breaking pace just yet. I am hoping that you will help me with making this a record breaking event. As of today we need 824 more people to register for congress to break the attendance record being held by Region 7. The deadline to register is fast approaching and we want to make sure that everyone has the opportunity to register at the discounted rate. The last date to pre-register is July 15. Please encourage your members to attend this terrific event. Registration will also take place on-site, but the cost will be greater. This event will not be back on the East coast for awhile.

At this time the registrations from the Region 6 states are as follows: (certainly very good, but can you help that number increase?) How about those who may not be member yet? Schools, YMCA, AAU groups – who else???

CT: 152
MA: 208
ME: 25
NH: 63
NY: 206
RI: 30
VT: 6

I have attached the listing of all of the speakers and the sessions. This listing as well as other information can be found on the website as well. I am sure you will see that this educational program holds something for everyone. Encourage your clubs to send their class and preschool teachers as well as their office managers and front office personnel. Please encourage your judges to attend. They will receive the 15 CPE credits and there is a great deal of education for them. All registered attendees will receive USA Gymnastics University elective credits.

A few of the highlights:

  • Trade Show Special opening on Wednesday, August 11 from 5-7 pm and special reception sponsored by the USGSA New this year!
  • Trade Show MEGA Raffle will give away $ 65,000 worth of prizes in equipment, apparel, software, educational course, memberships, trips, and more! Highest amount ever!
  • Extremely important and very special sessions from the USA Gymnastics legal counsel and insurance broker – Scott Himsel and Patrick O’Connor. These sessions are a must for everyone. Club owners, directs and volunteer chairs should plan to attend.
  • Every session is open to all attendees. We classify sessions so that attendees will know the target audience content, but anyone can attend any session.
  • Visa Championships at the XL Center – see the best of the best! Entertaining and educational.
  • Medal ceremony for the Women’s 2000 Olympic Team – See them get their medals on Wednesday at the Men’s competition. They will also attend the Thursday event.
  • Honoring the 1980 Olympic Teams – the 30 year anniversary
  • Region 6 Reception – Friday evening at the Marriott Hotel
  • Hall of Fame Luncheon and Induction Ceremony – Friday 11 – 1 pm ( reception begins at 10:30 am)
  • Hospitality center for all congress attendees every day of congress! At the Old State House – Pre and post competitive event. Must have credential to attend. Spend time with congress friends, HOF, VIP, sponsors and USA Gymnastics staff. New this year!
  • Closing celebrations for congress and championships – Saturday night following the event at the Old State House. Food, beverage, music, friends and fun. New this year!
  • Registered attendees receive Adidas bag at congress registration check-in.
  • Very special USA Gymnastics merchandise booth area. Technical materials, apparel and a lounge area to get information and questions answered on membership and education issues. A special booth area for club services. Meet the Member Services staff team.
  • Special area for our invited artist in residence as well as the Olympic collection display. This is be near the USA Gymnastics booth.
  • Sessions in the exhibit hall.
  • All activities and sites – Convention Center, XL Center, Old State House and downtown hotels are very walkable. No car needed

  • And in addition to all of the great things about congress, we are holding the annual business conference on Wednesday, August 11. This is a must for all clubs.

Well dear friends and associates, I think you may be able to tell how excited I am about this year’s congress. Please share this news and excitement with your members. Tell them how important it is for their professional growth and education. However, don’t forget all of the fun as well. We have quite a party planned.

Come on Region 6………………let’s break some records!

I’m here if you need me. Thank you for all you do. In a separate email I will send the map of the exhibit hall and the list of exhibitors.

At 6:40 PM Sunday, March 7th Robert Wallace McGann was born: 7 lbs. 9 oz 21 inches and a full head of black hair. Just an update for everyone. She was in labor while I was judging the meet and they did not want to call me until I was driving home.

HipHop Classic 2010 at Woodman Athletics
    Hello Everyone,

The time is near for our annual HipHop Classic meet held March 13-14,2010. We have upped the ante with some new additions this year that I am sure everyone will be excited about. We will once again be competing on 2 sets of bars and beams. There will be a non sanctioned meet on Saturday for unregistered 2-4 and there will be some boys competing as well. Also Saturday night will be our famous dance party where we have a few tricks that I am sure will be visually stunning. On Sunday the competition will continue as gymnasts from all over New England will be competing for glory. All gymnasts will receive hooded sweatshirts they tend to run small so order big. I need sweatshirt sizes and registrations ASAP as we have to order the shirts. All gymnasts are $55 teams of 3 or more are $30. Please mail entries to:

    Woodman Athletics
    PO Box 6272
    Brattleboro, VT 05301

    P.S.
registered level 4 might be competing on Saturday as well

Hope to see all of you soon. Please email me with any questions.

    Mid Season Updates from Gail
    Hello Judges and Coaches:

We are heading into February and the second sectional. I have a few hints to things I have seen recently and hope to help you out.

    1. At the Gr. Mt. Invite there were some individuals on the floor doing a "heel snap turn rather than the coupe" This is a .3 deduction. I wish I could remember who but when you practice this week, please just make sure the gymnasts are doing the correct turn. The beam gives a good description of the heel snap turn. If you have questions, check with the Floor judges on Sunday.

    2. I have seen two Level 8's this year with the hecht up on the bars. One was in the fall and her coach was notified and corrected the routine, one recently in a practice meet. This is so easy to miss as we see the high school competitors doing this and forget since it was allowed last year that it is unallowable. It potentially can cost the special requirement for flight and if the only bar change perhaps that also since the move would have no value.

    3. Alicia receives updates also from REg. 7 and passed on the reminder that stretch jumps and beat jumps have no value in the new code. Some may have mistakenly included a beat jump in a routine within a dance series so watch. I think most everyone is up on this. Thanks Alicia for the reminder.

    4. A questions was posed if the coach could be on the floor for Prep Opt. I emailed Kathy Ostberg and the answer is YES, they can without deduction.

    5. I just judged the Penn State, Alabama, Minnesota meet. I was asked if I ever go to meet and have my event changed (because I only bring that event with me for flying) I said no, but....guess what? I went from Vault to Floor but was called in the AM so was able to quickly switch folders and head out to the airport. On that note, the meet was filmed and will be on the Big Ten Network I think on Sat. so if you have that channel look for it. They did not film much of Alabama as it was a Big Ten meet but did Penn State and Minnesota. This would be a great meet to practice train on. Lots of the new bonus used and great routines. So, if thinking of throwing your hat into the collegiate availability arena, tape/tivo whatever. Good for training.

Anything new or unusual, let us know so we can keep everyone up to date and track.

    Happy Judging and Coaching,

    Gail

    Background Check Information
    Background Check Information

NCSI is launching an online "Applicant Status Check" tool that will allow Applicants on our full-service programs to log-in to our secure site and see the status of their background screening. Often in the process, NCSI requires additional information from Applicants to verify their identity. If additional information is needed and/or action is required by the Applicant, they will be informed of this via email and the online status tool. These will be the primary methods of notification to the Applicant, so please instruct your Applicants to check their email and the online status tool regularly, until such time that they see a COMPLETED status in the online tool, which means a final determination was issued to you.

Effective May 15th all Applicants will need a valid and active e-mail address in order to register for background screening with NCSI.
Communications from NCSI will largely be electronic, so it is imperative that Applicants have an e-mail account and that they check this regularly during the screening process.

Entry forms for the Level 9 Eastern Championships
Entry forms for the Level 9 Eastern and Western Championships and the JO Nationals are currently posted on the event web sites, which can be found at www.usa-gymnastics.org under Women: Women’s Program Events.
We are recommending that the clubs complete the entry form ahead of time and simply cross off the names of any athletes who DO NOT qualify. This should save time, especially when coaches have to get back to warm-ups for the next session. Clubs should also be reminded that they need to have a company check available at the Regional meets to pay for all of their athletes who have qualified. DO NOT pay for alternates, but be sure to indicate names of any alternates on the entry form.

Sectional meet 2 at GMG on Sunday Feb 8th
Please read the info below carefully and it is very important that we work together for this very difficult schedule. There are a lot of kids and to make sure they weren't competing until 9pm on Sunday I had to be very creative. There is an overlap in each session so one group will be competing while the other is warming up. IT IS IMPORTANT THAT THE ENTRY AND EXIT FROM THE GYM IS QUICK AND QUIET TO GIVE THE COMPETITORS THE BEST MEET POSSIBLE. PARENTS OF THE 2ND AND 3RD SESSIONS SHOULD BE ASKED TO COME AT THE MARCH IN TIME TO REDUCE THE CONGESTION AND CONFUSION. COACHES NEED TO BE READY TO TAKE CONTROL OF THE KIDS AS THEY ENTER THE BUILDING AND GET THEM ORGANIZED AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE.
